Sleep inside a Portuguese windmill on the hill above Setúbal bay. Wake to water on three sides and the wind coming in off the Atlantic.

Two stone mills once ground the town's grain up here, turning in the Atlantic wind. They have been quiet a long time. Inside each one now: a bed, a fireplace, and a window that holds the whole bay.
They stand alone on a wooded slope beside the São Filipe fortress. Below, the Sado estuary opens toward the Tróia peninsula, wide and pale in the early light — dolphins come into it most mornings, and you can watch them from the terrace with your coffee. Behind the hill the Arrábida pines run down to beaches that stay empty well into September. Lisbon is forty-five minutes away and feels considerably further.
There are two mills on this hill and nothing else. Whichever one you take, the evening is yours: the light goes red over the water, the town begins to glitter below, and nobody comes up the road.
Each is 45 m² over several floors, with its own terrace, kitchen and parking.
The Sunrise Mill
The mill that takes the first light. The sun comes up over the estuary and fills the room long before the town below is awake — and there is nothing to be done about it but make coffee and stand on the terrace in a blanket, watching the water turn from grey to silver to blue.
The Sunset Mill
This one faces west, into the evening. Supper on the terrace while the sun travels the length of the coast and goes into the water, and afterwards the fire — it turns cool up here, even in August.
Bread still warm from the bakery, left at your door while you are still asleep. Sheep's cheese and cured ham from farms in the Arrábida hills, fruit off the stalls at the Livramento market, eggs, honey from the pine hills, and coffee. Carry it out to the terrace and take as long over it as you like — the view is not going anywhere.
The whole property can be taken for a single event — both mills, the grounds and the view, with no other guests on the hill.
